Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Abstract / summary in English:

In dairy grasslands, earthworms are of vital importance for organic matter decomposition, nutrient mineralisation, soil structure, water infiltration, root growth and ultimately crop yield. Anecic earthworms, in particular, play a unique role in these processes. However, these organisms are very sensitive to intensive (soil-turning) tillage, because tillage destroys their permanent burrows and the litter layer they feed on. If dairy farmers want to make better use of the services of anecic earthworms, more insight is needed into the effect of grassland renewal (ploughing and direct reseeding to grass; or ploughing followed by one season of maize before reseeding to grass) on earthworm populations. In this article we present the results of a field experiment to compare the two main impacts of grassland renewal on earthworms: mechanical damage from soil tillage, and reduced food availability and increased soil exposure due to sward destruction.
