Abstract / summary in English:

Agroforestry -defined as “the practice of deliberately integrating woody vegetation (trees or shrubs) with crop and/or livestock production systems to benefit from the resulting ecological and economic interactions”- has the potential to contribute to more biodiversity in the rural landscape. Despite several policy instruments and programs to enhance biodiversity, further development or introduction of agroforestry progresses slowly in The Netherlands. In this article we present several reasons why, from a farmers’ point of view, planting trees in the Dutch rural landscape is unattractive at this moment. Furthermore, we suggest possible solutions that enables further development of agroforestry in the country.
