Abstract / samenvatting in Nederlands:

Abstract / summary in English:

This booklet presents basic information for greenhouse growers converting to organic production methods, including research results of the Biokas project. Organic greenhouse farming is characterised by rapid innovation. Currently (2005) the Netherlands has about 25 organic growers who specialise in commercial greenhouse crop production (total acreage about 55 hectares). In addition, many other growers combine field crop production with crop production in unheated greenhouses. Until recently, organic greenhouse production was limited to vegetables, but in 2004 three flower growers converted to organic methods. This opens up new possibilities for crop rotation. Product diversity and product quality are increasingly important. Soil conditions play a central role in crop quality. To develop a healthy soil, growers need to fine-tune fertiliser use with crop rotation, water management, soil tillage and measures to promote soil biological activity. This booklet presents a number of guidelines.
